ONGLEY OVERSEAS
C. M. ("Dick") Ongley, one of Wellington's Rugby representatives and a leading light in the Poneke Club, left for Australia recently. He is expected back soon, and may later be joining the Navy, for which -he has been accepted. He was missed in the keen match which Poneke had with Johnsonville.
Lawton and R. Wright were also missing from Poneke's ranks. Holden, the half-back who substituted, did well, as also did Potiki, who came on at second five-eighth when Vile retired injured in the second spell. Johnsonville had Hallewell (five-eighth), T. Liddle (winger), and McAleese absent. To .fill a gap Welsh was brought out of retirement and he did many good things. Leading packmen in the stirring struggle between Poneke and Johnsonville were V. Calcinai, Rose, Rankine, Hedges, and Hegglun for Poneke, and A. Kenny, Mcßride, Grant, L. Liddle, and Lewes for Johnsonville.
C. Parsloe always aroused the crowd when he received the ball, running strongly with a very effective'' fend. Poneke knew him of old —when he used to represent them—and placed a solid player in A. Culley opposite. They made it pretty well an "honours easy" decision.
