MIDNIGHT TILL DAWN
DARING ATTACKS SEVERE WEATHER ¥ " (Received July 25, 2.40 p.m.) LONDON, July 24. R.A.F. bombers started raids on Germany and Holland shortly after midnight and continued them till dawn. Naval dockyards at Wilhelmshaven were also the object of a lightning raid. Our squadrons encountered severe weather, dense low cloud, and intense cold. They made daring low attacks through a barrage of anti-aircraft, machine-gun, and even rifle fire, and scored direct hits on the majority of the targets aimed at, leaving a trail of blazing factories and oil depots and wrecked buildings and bases. One bomber which was unable to locate its target on account of poor visibility bombed searchlight batteries and put six out of action. German fighters were repeatedly encountered. One bomber set fire to a Messerschmitt, which turned on its back and disappeared in the clouds, blazing furiously. A burst of fire from a second Messerschmitt killed the British observer, but a second later ti-acer bullets from the bomber were seen to hit the German in the cockpit and his plane turned sharply and dived head- , long into clouds.
