EXTENT OF INDUSTRY
ROOM,FOR EXPANSION
The latest New Zealand statistics showed that there were 35 ice cream ""manufacturing establishments in New -Zealand, employing 230 persons, said ■"'the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W Lee Martin), opening the conference of the New Zealand Ice Cream Manufacturers' Association yesterday. The wages paid amounted to oyer £51 000 yearly. The approximate value of the land, buildings, machinery, and plant exceeded £400,000, the cost of materials used.was over £100,000, and the products werevalued at £260,000. The industry consumed about 286,000 gallons of milk and over 75,000, gallons of cream. The cost of these commodities was nearly £42,000. The quantity of ice cream made was in. the vicinity of 700,000 gallons, varying with the weather. It would thus be seen that the industry was. quite a substantial one, but it was capable of expansion. The annual consumption of ice cream was under half a gallon a person; in America it was three gallons a person.
