NATIONAL MUSICAL COMPETITIONS.

An event of considerable musical interest takes place in the Town Hall Concert Chamber on Friday, August 2, when the Dominion finals in the National Musical Competitions will be judged by Mr. Andersen Tyrer. Choirs from various parts of the country will compete in the Centennial Music Festival. The prizes are £125, £50, and £25. There are two test pieces (a) "Music When Soft Voices Die," composed by Andersen Tyrer, and Sir Charles Stanford's "Diaphenia." On the same evening the String Quartet Contest for two prizes of £50 and £25 will be decided. The test pieces are the First Movement of Haydn's Quartet in D Major (the "Lark" Quartet) and First Movement of Quartet in A Minor. Op. 51 by Brahms. Items will be given by supporting artists.
