MORE DESTROYERS
THE BRITISH NAVY
INCREASE SINCE WAR BROKE
OUT
LOSSES EXCEEDED
(British Official Wireless.)
(Received July 24, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, July 23.
While no official figures are obtainable in wartime, the opinion of reliable independent specialists is that the destroyer strength of the British Navy is considerably greater now than at the outbreak of the war, despite the fact that the sinking of H.M.S. Brazen brings the destroyer losses to 27,
Last September there were 175 destroyers in service. That figure was shortly afterwards increased to 183 by the completion of two ships and the acquisition of six which were built for Brazil. Under construction at that time were 24 more destroyers, many of which should be completed by now.
A large number of other new warships will be completed by the end of this year.
