FAMOUS DRIVER PASSES
The death*of Mr. G. Hers.ey, fox* many years one of the most prominent reinSmen connected with the American harness racing sport, is reported. Widely known as the driver of the great pacer, Dan Patch, 1.55£, holder of the world's record from 1905 to 1938, Mr. Hersey rose to fame quickly as a driver following his engagement as trainer for the International Stock Food Farm stables, owned by M. W. Savage, Minneapolis. Hersey started driving for Mr. Savage in 1904, and the following year he drove Dan Patch to his record mile at Lexington, likewise piloting the great pacer in many of his exhibitions over a widespread area. For a number of years, when with Mr. Savage, he managed the exhibition tours of Dan Patch and the four pacing stars, Minor Heir, 1.58 i, Lady Maud C, 2.0£, Hedgewood Boy, 2.1, and George Gano, 2.2, the latter quartet $taging many extremely fast miles. In addition to Dan Patch, 1.55J, Mr. Hersey also drove Minor Heir, 1.585, to his best record.
