EVACUATION IN EMERGENCY
"There has been a good deal of talk about evacuation by many who have not the faintest idea of what the undertaking involves," stated the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, addressing a meeting of wardens in the emergency precautions scheme, reports the "New Zealand Herald." When the time came to make a decision, in relation to invasion, at all events, the governing factor must be the strategical exigencies of the defending army. Recent events in Europe showed only too poignantly how tragic were the consequences to military action of roads overcrowded with refugees. From the discussions he had had with the authorities, he was led to believe that evacuation^ on a wholesale scale could be ruled out as a practical possibility. Sir Ernest added that careful thought had been given to measures for handling schoolchildren, and the details would be discussed at a meeting with educational authorities this week.
