RELEASE OF GOODS

PROCEDURE OUTLINED

The Minister of Customs (the Hon. W. Nash) announced today that he had received advice from the Australian authorities of the steps for securing release of cargo from the Prize Court to.be taken by importers of goods which wore- on .the' Italian ship Remo at the time of her capture in Freinantle on June 11. ,

The Minister stated that consignees will require to satisfy - the Collector of Customs at the port of destination that they are not of enemy nationality and that they were the owners of the goods on June 11 last Consignees will need to submit original bills of lading and invoices, also evidence of payment for or of the amount due in respect of the goods or for freight thereon. If satisfactory proof of non-enemy ownership is produced to the Collector' he will make arrangements with the Australian authorities for, the release of the goods from the control of the Prize Court.

It will be necessary "for consignees to, pay to the Collector. of Customs, acting on behalf of the , Australian authorities,' any; amounts due for Australian inter-State freight and for any charges or expenses of the Australian' Government or the Prize Court., : SHIPMENT TO NEW ZEALAND. After their goods are released from the Prize Court consignees must make their own arrangements for shipment to New Zealand. "If is understood," said Mr. Nash, "that cargo for all New Zealand ports will be discharged frtirn the'Remo at, Sydney. It is probable that consignees will be able to arrange, if they so desire, for the transhipment of the' released goods with the intercolonial shipping companies. If consignees are in doubt as to the procedure they should consult the Collector of Customs at their port. In cases where consignees are unable to satisfy the Collector as to the non-enemy ownership of goods on June 11 last, he will submit ally available evidence to the Australian authorities in order that directions may be obtained as to the steps necessary to secure release,of the goods in question. 1
