ENEMY ALIENS

BRITISH MEASURES

RECTIFYING OF MISTAKES

(British Official Wireless.)

(Received July 24, 2 p.m.)

RUGBY, July 23,

In announcing a decision. regarding revision of the conditions governing the internment of enemy aliens, the Home Secretary, Sir John Anderson, stated in the House of Commons that the policy of general internment which followed the invasion of the Low Countries and France was necessary and inevitable. .

While there was no question of reversing the policy, mistakes which had been made regarding the internment of a number of persons who were ill or old must be rectified, and he was also arranging procedure to secure the release of individuals who could render special service to the war effort. To carry this out a small committee would be set up.

Sir John Anderson also stated that the responsibility for the welfare of interned aliens and the selection of those who were to be sent overseas would be transferred to the Home Office and he concluded by announcing the appointment of an advisory council, to be attached to the Refugee Department of the Foreign Office, which would concern itself with questions affecting aliens of many nationalities, including those from countries which had been over-run. The council could also advise and assist in the arrangements for the welfare of those who were detained in internment camps.
