SERVICE BY MARRIED MEN
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —May a suggestion be made even at this late hour regarding the war measures of the Government." Voluntary enlistment is open to single and married men alike, but only for universal service. This ill allows the single man to wait for conscription, while his married brother volunteers, since he has been assured that no conscripts will be called up until the voluntary recruits are exhausted. Would it not be possible to allow enlistment in the Territorials for home defence only to remain permanently open to married men, while conscripting the single men for universal service? This would enable men with responsibilities to do their bit, without bringing hardship on their families. Or would it not be possible to assure married men that voluntary enlistment will be opened to them again later when their turn comes, and single men are not available? Then they would not rush in before the single men.—l am, etc., FAIR DEAL.
