RAID CASUALTIES

BIGGEST IN THE TOWNS

MUCH WORSE TO COME

CONFIDENCE IN DEFENCES

LONDON, July 10,

The Chief of the Civil Defence Operational Staff, General Sir Hugh Elles, said in a broadcast: "The air raid casualties in the big towns are 12 times as great.as in the little towns and the country. The deaths in last week's air raids were less than half the number of road fatalities in the same week of last year, and similarly the number of those injured was one-fiftieth. "Something much more serious is coming, but I have the highest confidence in the efficiency of the civil defence, and also in our sticking power, however highly it is tested."
