TRADE REFUSE

DAYTIME COLLECTION

Trade refuse in the city area is to be collected during the daytime from August 5. Councillor W. Appleton, chairman of the works committee, which made a recommendation along these lines, said this move had been necessitated by petrol restrictions. Councillor M. F. Luckie opposed the proposal and said it would add to the untidy appearance of some of the streets in the early mornings. It would bring down a storm of criticism on the council.

Councillor Appleton said that to improve the appearance of the streets was one of the objects of the committee. Under the existing arrangement tins were left out all night and were frequently upset. The City Engineer said that under the new plan business people would not have to place rubbish tins outside their doors at night before they, locked up. Collection would start at 9 a.m. and the men would go into the shops for the containers as they did with private houses. The report containing the recommendation was adopted.
