THE PURCHASE TAX

MAY BE DROPPED

LABOUR OPPOSITION

(Received July 10, 2 p.m.)

LONDON, July 9,

The National Council of Labour, after a meeting at the House of Commons, attended by Mr.. Arthur Greenwood and Mr. Herbert Morrison, issued a statement that the Council wasunanimously opposed to the purchase tax, which was regarded as an unjustifiable extension of indirect taxation, imposing an unfair burden on the poorer section of the community.

The statement has strengthened a belief in the lobbies that the tax will be dropped.
