CHATHAM ISLANDS
STEAMER SERVICE
GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY
"On learning that the Tees, which had been \ providing the Chatham Islands with a service, was being offered for sale and being mindful of the needs of the people who depend so much on a steamer service to market their products, the Government," said the Minister of Marine (the Hon. D. G. McMillan) today, "has decided to offer a subsidy of £1200, inclusive of the cost of carrying mail, for one year to the successful tenderer of the Tees, provided that an adequate service is maintained to the islands.
"It has been suggested that the service should consist of two trips during the October-November period, one of which shall at least be in October; from December to April the trips shall be at approximately intervals not exceeding fourteen days, and from May to September two trips—one, say, in July and one in September. The details of- an adequate service will, however, be determined by myself in consultation with the parties."
Mr. T. H. McCombs, M.P., and Mr. E, T. Tirikatene, M.P,. had both associated themselves with representations made to him in connection with the Tees, added the Minister.
