LATE SPEAKER

SIR WALTER CARNCROSS

The Legislative Council met yesterday afternoon for the first time since the death of Sir Walter Carncross, who. was Speaker of the Council for ■twenty-one years, only retiring from that position last year.

The Leader of the Council (the Hon. D. Wilson) expressed the regret of Councillors at the passing of one who had presided over their debates for so long and moved the customary resolution expressing appreciation of his services to New Zealand and sympathy with his relatives.

Other Councillors who spoke were the Hons. J. Alexander (Auckland), Sir Charles Statham (Wellington), W .H. Mclntyre (Nelson), W. Perry (Wellington), A. Burns (Auckland), J. Cotter (Auckland), and T. F. Doyle (Southland).

The Council adjourned as a mark of respect and will not resume until Friday at 10.30 a.m.
