World tin production for the first quarter of 1940. at 52,600 tons com-'' pared with 72,500 tons for the last quarter of 1939, though the figures for the respective months of the quarter were progressively upward—January, 14.900 tons: February, 15,700 tons; and March, 22,000 tons. Exports from the seven signatory countries amounted to £46,453 tons, according to statistics of the International Tin Research and Development Council. World consumption for the 1940 quarter was estimated at 62,400 tons, against 53,000 tons in the last quarter of .1939. Estimating the United States' consumption in March at 10,000 tons, the total apparent consumption in that country in the quarter would be 25,000 tons, leaving about 37,000 tons for all other countries. -During the period, the visible supply decreased by 2040 tons, and the smelters' stocks (including the carryover) by 1135 tons, making a decrease of 3175 tons in the total stocks.
