GOAL YARD WORKERS

< -Comment upon Mr. Mount joy's : reference to the Coal Yard Labourers' i Award was made today by Mr. P. M. i Butler, secretary of the New Zealand Labourers' Federation, in a supplied 1 statement. "-"Mr. Mountjoy's reference to the '. awards, said Mr. Butler, was as fol- i lows: — "In the Coal Yard Labourers' Award the weekly wage of labourers has i been increased by 5s a week, plus a payment of 10 per cent, on the weekly < wage to workers who are required to ; work more than 40 and up to 44 hours a week. This brings the weekly wage lip to £4 19s, as compared with £4 5s ; a week previously paid. The casual i rate for labourers in coal yards has 1 been increased by 3d per hour.' ; - "The statement made by Mr. Mount- 1 joy which I have quoted," said Mr. ■ Butler, "is misleading in so far that < Mr. Mount joy left out the salient facts < which are as follows. < "(1) The increases which he men- ' tions apply to the Wellington industrial ' district only, in which there are not l more than 20 workers affected. 1 "(2) With the exception of a few ■ workers in Nelson (where the hourly ' rate was increased by 2d) and the few workers already mentioned in Wellington, there was no increase in the I hourly wages of the rest of these workers throughout New Zealand. :- "(3) Thennetw t award takes the place of an award made in 1936—four years 1
