RECORD IN JUNE

AIRCRAFT PRODUCTION

THE INCREASE IN BRITAIN

MINISTER GIVES HARD FACTS

{British Official Wireless.) (Received July 8, noon.) RUGBY, July 7. The Minister of Aircraft Production (Lord Beaverbrook) issued the following statement on Sunday night: "There is no denying that I am an optimistic man with all the defects and all the benefits that go with optimism. Optimistic men are sure to see advantages in a situation. They always feel confident about overcoming obstacles, and it is necessary to bear this in mind when my story is told. "But here are hard facts. Our aircraft production in the month of June was a record. We achieved a very fine increase on everything that had gone before. In fact, we produced more than double the total of aircraft produced in the same month last year, wh^n preparations for war were going on at full blast. We also turned out far more thar twice the number of engines, thus increasing our surplus stock. "The books of account tell the record. American aircraft which are arriving here at present are a considerable contribution to our air fleet, and if the seas remain as free as they are today the shipments of aircraft reaching us from America will soon give an addi- i tional output every month of real value to us. We have bought immensely increased quantities of aircraft j and engines in the United States in recent weeks. In fact, the total value of aircraft orders we have placed in the United States amounts to well over 1,000,000.000 dollars." "In Canada," he said, "we have bought over 50,000,000 dollars' worth of aircraft "and parts. Deliveries of certain types will come forward -in increasing quantities. "Now, do not imagine that these facts are put forward with the purpose of lulling you to sleep. There is much to do before we can be satisfied with our achievements in production. I am well aware of it, and it is my prayer that this Ministry will not fail in the task which Mr. Churchill has allotted to us. Not if we can help it."
