PILLAGED TERRITORY
RICH LANDS TO RUSSIA
(Received July 8, 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 7. Still further accentuating the threat of famine in Europe, the appropriation by the Soviet Government of territories in Bessarabia and Bukovina means the loss to Rumania of some of the most fertile districts in the Western Hemisphere. It is believed that about 7,000,000 acres of cultivable land have now changed hands, representing over 20 per cent, of Rumania's agricultural area. The appropriated territories are mainly concerned with the production of maize, with wheat, barley, rye, and oats ranking next in importance. Rumania also loses practically all. its soya bean, rape seed, and castor seed production areas upon which, incidentally, Germany had previously drawn heavily. The Bucharest correspondent of "The Times" says that the Russian occupation of Northern ?Bukavina and Bessarabia is complete, but the horrors attendant on the occupation continue. About 15,000 Jews, who are anxious to return to Bessarabia were marooned for days in insanitary conditions on lighters off Galati. They are denied both admission to the Soviet and readmission to Rumania.
