ARANDORA STAR
NEW ZEALAND VICTIM
ONE OF THE ENGINEERS
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, July 7. Advice has been received that A. R. Mowat, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Mowat, Clydevale, South Otago, who was serving as an engineer on the Arandora Star when she was torpedoed last week, is not among the survivors
and must be considered one of the victims of the U-boat's attack. Mr. Mowat was born in Dunedin and educated at the Christian Brothers' High School. After gaining engineering experience in Dunedin he joined the Union Steam Ship Company. He was an engineer on the Rangitiki for 18 months before transferring to the Blue Star Line. In a recent letter he indicated that he was sailing in the Arandora Star on a special voyage. A younger brother, Acting Flight Lieutenant N. J. Mowat, is serving with the Royal Air Force in Britain.
The United States Treasury has bought 700.000 ounces of quinine, worth about £100,000.
