PLAY IN THE MUD

KARORI BEAT HUIA

Muddy grounds spoiled play in the men's hockey competitions on Saturday, and one or two of the senior games which promised to be good exhibitions degenerated into muddy scrambles. KARORI I v. HUIA. There was little between Karori I and Huia at the outset, and from start to finish the game was a hard struggle. Marshall's saves for Huia were a feature of the early part of ths game, and I'errin's steadiness in Karori's back line was a valuable asset to his team. Jeromson scored first for Karori, netting after Roberts had taken the ball down the centre of the field. McKelvie put in some good work on Karori's wing, but little luck came his way. With a hard shot from close in, Rough equalised for Huia, and there was a lot of hard work on both sides before Roberts darted in and scored the final goal. The game ended Karori I 2. Huia 1. WELLINGTON v. UNIVERSITY. Wellington and University drew in a hard match at Petone. University were leading J by 2 goals to 1 at the end of the first half, but Wellington had the stamina, and with a bit of luck might have forced a decision in their favour. Scorers for Wellington were Buchan (2) and Ferguson, and for University Scott, Shaw, and Elias. The final score "was University 3, Wellington 3. KARORI II v. WESLEY. Karori II were definitely the superior side in the match against Wesley. Nimmo was the outstanding man for Karori, and , played a solid game, which had its effect on the whole team. Beck, who turner! out for the first time after a long absence, played inside right for Karori. and was the outstanding forward on the field. Beck, Hammel, and Thypers scored for Karori, and Farrell for

Wesley. The game ended: Karori II 3, Wesley 1. HUTT v. TECHNICAL. Hutt succeeded in adapting themselves more successfully to conditions than did their opponents, Technical. Technical relied chiefly upon the passing rush and frequently lost position, whereas the more solid tactics of the Hutt forwards were more suited to the heavy ground. McLeod and. JMuir scored for Hutt. The game ended Hutt 2, Technical 0. LOWER GRADES. Lower grade results were as follows:— Senior B (First Division).—Karori 2, Hula 1; Petone 1, Hutt 0 ; University 2, Island Bay 2: Technical 7, Wellington 2.
