FRUIT INDUSTRY

COSTS PERTURB GROWERS

The official organ of the orchardists remarks that "while most growers will not know until they receive their final payments what their financial position is, many have already stated that they cannot carry on, and, in fact, have notified their intention of abandoning their orchards. This is no reflection on the Government purchase scheme. Under free marketing during a period of war these would probably' have been abandoned, but it undeniably emphasises the border line condition of the price now paid. It is inevitable that increased costs will have to be faced next season." The necessity for concentration on war effort is recognised, but the growers "insist that next season's purchase price be increased by at least the actual increases in cost of production and packing, if a bare living is to be obtained from fruit growing."
