ADJUSTMENT OF HOUSE RENTS
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I feel sure that there are thousands of tenants in Wellington and indeed throughout New Zealand who feel just as the correspondent "House Hunter" does. It surely must be recognised that a rent of £3 or more per week for a house or even a fiat situated in the suburbs is out of all proportion to the original outlay and it is time that the Government took action to adjust this unfair position. The Government claims to attend to the interests of the so-called working class and yet high rents are the greatest barrier to these people. What standard. of comfort can exist in a home from which half its income is expended in rent and a large proportion of the remainder in increased taxation? lam sure that we realise that this increased taxation is to aid New Zealand's war contribution but this, added to our already unreasonable rent, places most of us in a still more difficult position.—l am, etc.,
ANOTHER HOUSE HUNTER.
