COL. KNOX APPROVED
ISOLATIONISTS OBJECT
FURTHER TESTIMONY
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.) (Received July 4, 9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 3. The Senate Naval Committee approved by nine votes to five Colonel Frank Knox's nomination as Secretary of the Navy. Senator Holt declared that he would submit a minority, report against Colonel Knox and indicated that the isolationists will fight the appointment to the Cabinet of Colonel Knox and Mr. H. L. Stimson (Secretary of War) on the floor of the Senate.
Colonel Knox told the committee that any British warship which entered an American port would have to be interned. He also opposed the convoying of supply ships to the belligerent countries by the United States because "it would mean war."
In both respects he differed from the policy advocated by Mr. Stimson. Colonel Knox added that, to insure its defence, the United States should acquire sites for naval bases in South America, which was filled with warring political factions and ripe for penetration by the totalitarian Powers which would menace the United States.
He said there was less hope than ever before of the United States exerting influence to prevent eternal dissension in Europe. Europe was facing a period of acute misery, and the United States might be useful to the rest of the world if it conducted itself in away the world would desire to imitate.
A mesage from Topeka, Kansas, states that Mr. Woodring, the former Secretary for the Navy, said that he would not appear voluntarily before the Senate Committee.
In the course of his remarks yesterday to'the Senate Military Committee Mr. Stimson said: "No one would wish to send American troops across our borders unless it was necessary for the protection of the United States itself. On the other hand, Ido not believe that the United States can safely be protected by a purely defensive defence."
