WELLINGTON MEETING

FIRST DAY FIELDS

ELEVEN IN STEEPLECHASE

' Of the four meetings held at Trentham in the season there is none more popular than the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting in July, and it is doubtful if the club has ever secured better all-round fields for the opening day of this fixture than have accepted for next Tuesday. The total is 154, which is only five less than the record of last July. The form comes from all quarters of the Dominion, and a very high standard promises to be reached on the three days next week:

The feature events next week are the Wellington Steeplechase and Whyte Handicap on the opening day, the Parliamentary Handicap on the middle day, and the Winter Hurdles on the final day. The acceptance for the two first-named of these races was taken last evening, and the response has been most gratifying.

A notable absentee from the Wellington Steeplechase field is Slayer, while further withdrawals are Santoft, Cottingham, Hirangi. Biform, Brigadore, Floodlight, Glenvane, Makoi, and Smiling Thru. This leaves a representative lot of eleven, which is headed by those two brilliant performers Padishah and Clarion Call, who will probably monopolise the betting. No fewer than 29 acceptors have, been attracted for the Whyte Handicap. The comparative acceptances for the first day in the last three years have been: —
