INDEPENDENCE DAY
United States citizens throughout the world are celebrating today as the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence,- the document by which the thirteen original States of the Union broke their colonial allegiance to Great Britain in 1776. The document, which is the best known and noblest of American State papers, had no permanent, home for 101 years after its proclamation. During its wanderings it twice narrowly escaped destruction by fire, and in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 was nearly captured by the British. In 1921 it was placed in the Library of Congress, where it is on permanent exhibition in a shrine constructed for its preservation and safe keeping. •
There is no official celebration of the occasion today in Wellington.
