HOURS AND PRODUCTION

(To the. Editor.)

Sir,—ln the Parliamentary debate we heard a Government member supporting the 40-hour week, claiming that to increase hours would result in unemployment. The aircraft industry is working a' 44-hour week. Has :that increased unemployment? Increase hours' to produce equipment for the troops. Is that not the only logical course to take?

The Government is anxious to maintain the standard of living. A correspondent suggests that the unused ground should be cultivated, and to produce food in plenty. Why continue Public Works waste when Public Works employees are there to produce foodstuffs? By increasing producticyi the cost of living can be kept down. —I am, etc., FIFTY-HOUR WEEK.
