There had never been # a more de«- ---' perate need for men oft the nations which loved freedom *nd cherished ithe tenets of modern (civilisation to
gather into an unconquerable (defensive force,, with every elemesit of their spiritual and material rc»ources and their moral and physical strength. There' was no more dangero-fis folly, said Mr. Hull, than to thinik. that America's achievements could be preserved by isolation. Nation .-after nation had been crushed, overrun, and enslaved by brute force, comb ined with fraud and guile.
"As dismal darkness descends on more of the earth's surface,"; said Mr. Hull, "and as the menacing shadow becomes blacker and blackcsr athwart our continent, the instinct of selfpreservation bids us bewaije."
