FURTHER ENEMY PROGRESS
(Received June 21, 2.15 p.m.) LONDON, June 20. A Berlin report says that wellinformed quarters state that the '.armistice negotiations are being held $at Compeigne. The French radio stated that the French armistice emissaries, among whom Admiral Abrial was included, travelled in a white plane. The French community in South Africa has cabled to President Lebrun, describing a separate peace as incompatible with France's tradition and honour. The French community in Yugoslavia has also telegraphed to M. '. Lebrun, beseeching that he shall i immediately break off pourparlers ! with the enemy. Madrid reports that, according to ; the latest reports from Bordeaux, i Marshal Petain is remaining Premier. A French military spokesman said ; that the Germans in Western France are progressing feebly. The enemy's main effort is concentrated in the east, where the French army in AlsaceLorraine is trying to escape from a trap. < German mechanised forces cut across country north-east of Lyons to Bellegarde, 15 miles from Geneva. These units, presumably, are trying to make contact with the Italians, who have not yet advanced. Along the main line of the Loire the French army withdrew a few miles "south of Tours to the Cher River.
