LONG SERVICE
GOVERNMENT HOUSE
SENIOR ORDERLY RETIRES
The retirement is announced of Staff Sergeant-Mai or E. J. Barwell, senior orderly at Government House, after 43 years' service. Sergeant-Major Barwell joined the Permanent Artillery as a gunner in 1897, and shortly afterwards was appointed to Government House where, during the intervening years, he has acted as orderly to successive Governors and Governors-General. When his Majesty the King (then the Duke of York) visited New Zealand in 1927, Sergeant-Major Barwell received the Medal of the Royal Victorian Order, and on the occasion of the Birthday Honours in 1938 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for long and valuable service. ■* Invariably courteous and helpful m all circumstances, Sergeant-Major Barwell will be long remembered by all with whom he came in contact. At Government House last evening opportunity was taken to make a suitable presentation to Sergeant-Major Barwell and to wish him health and happiness in the future. , '
