AWKWARD TIME

AUSTRALIAN ROUND-UP

ITALIAN CANE-CUTTERS

(Received June 13, 1 a.m.)

SYDNEY, June 12,

The rounding up of Italian nationals in all Australian States was continued today and it is understood that at least 2000 males of military age or holding Fascist sympathies have already been interned and about 5000 await examination by the military authorities. The chief Italian colonies a. located in the Queensland canefields, also the Griffith and Leeton irrigation areas in southern New South Wales, and the Werribee and Shepparton districts in Victoria.

The apprehension of Italians on the sugar plantations in Quepnsland led to an awkward situation where canecutting was in full swing. A report from Brisbane today states that ample labour is likely to be forthcoming when the Commonwealth drive against aliens is completed.
