PAINT WORKERS' AWARD

The northern, Wellington, Otago, and Southland Paint and Varnish Workers award, issued by Mr. J. A. Gilmour, S.M., is for a 40-hour week. The only matters referred to the Arbitration Court were wages of semi-skilled workers, casual labour, accommodation, and the term of the award. The award comes into force as regards wages from May 31 last for one year. Minimum rates of wages are as follows:—Leading hands, £5 10s per week; shaders, varnish cookers, and gum-runners, £5 ss; mixers and grinders, £5; other adult workers, £4 10s. The casual workers' minimum rate is 2s 6d an hour. Minimum rates for female workers range from £1 for the first six months to £2 10s after the seventh six months.
