SYDNEY DISQUALIFICATION
Sir Leighton, who recently won a jumpers' flat event at Canterbury Park, Sydney, has since been disqualified on an objection by the second horse because the conditions of entry were not complied with. The owners and trainer were fined £10. Notice of appeal has been given.
The chairman of the stipendiary stewards said that mitigating circumstances associated with the entry of Sir Leighton were given in evidence by the secretary of the Canterbury Park Club, who, at the time nominations were taken, advised the trainer that, providing the horse had qualified by competing in three hurdle races when the race came on for decision, he would be eligible. The conditions of the race restricted the event to horses who had competed in three hurdle races. When nominations closed Sir Leighton had run only in two such races, but a few days later he complied with the conditions by running in a hurdle race at Rosebery.
