JAPANESE DRIVE

KWANGTUNG PROVINCE

MORE THAN ONE FORCE

(Received May 27, 1.30 p.m.)

NEW YORK, May 26.

The Hong Kong correspondent of the "New York Times" says that a Japanese offensive in the Kwangtung Province was begun on May 22, reaching its"' maximum in the Tsungfu sector with a drive from Liangkow, which the Japanese captured on May 23, but at present they are meeting entrenched Chinese forces.

Meanwhile 5000 Japanese along the Canton-Hankow railway are making a thrust from Sunkai to Paktong, a force of 7000 is in Tsengshinhsien, north of the East River, making a thrust northwards in support of the Liangkow offensive; and a third force of 5000 in Sheklung, on the Canton-Kowloon railway, is reported to be preparing to advance on Waichow along the East River.

It is believed that the attacks are intended to split up and confuse the defence but General Yu Han-mou was forewarned and has troops at all the threatened points. The Chinese claim that already there have been 3000 Japanese casualties.
