PROGRESS OF SCHEME

"During the week that has elapsed 3ince the Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Eraser) announced the scheme for lohie defence 'training good progress las been made in arranging for the raining and accommodation of Terriorial officers and other ranks in their raining camps and at district schools, aid Colonel R. A. Row, D.5.0., Officer Jommanding the Central Military Dis.rict, in a statement to . "The Post" today. Officers and n.c.o.s of the Ist Battalion, Hawke's Bay Regiment, the Ist Battalion, Wellington-West Coast Regiment, the 2nd Field Company, N.Z. Engineers, the Central Depot, N.Z. Corps of Signals, and "B" Company, N.Z. Scottish, will be called up on August 1 for two months' training. They will go into camp at the Central District School of Instruction, Tauherenikau. Officers and n.c.o.s of the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade will be called up on August 1 to go into training at Waiouru. The men of the above units will be called up on October 1 to do three months' training at Waiouru during October, November, and December. Officers and n.c.o.s of the Ist Battalion, Taranaki Regiment will be called up on November 1 for two months' training at the District School, which will then be back at Trentham. The men will be called up on January 1 for three months' training at Waiouru. . Other units from the Central District to be trained at Waiouru during the same period are the 2nd Composite Company, N.Z.A.S.C, and the 2nd Field Ambulance. The dates for calling up the three mounted rifle regiments in the district have not yet been, fixed. BIG CAMP STRENGTH. Territorial units from the Northern Military District will be at Waiouru at the same time as those from the Central District and at times the total camp strength will be about 5000 of all ranks. To enable the Central District School of Instruction to be operated for a period at Tauherenikau the Wairarapa Racing Club has placed the racecourse at the disposal of the Army authorities and Colonel Row said the action of the. stewards of the club was much appreciated. While at Tauherenikau the school will accommodate 90 Territorial commissioned and 250 non-commissioned officers in addition to Expeditionary Force officer and n.c.o. training units. The school will transfer to Tauherenikau on June 1. Full use will be made of the existing racecourse buildings, and other facilities *to be provided will make the accommodation comparable with that at Trentham.
