The work of the Hutt County Council in the past year was. reviewed by the chairman, Mr. S. Blacklev, at the annual meeting today.
The financial position was satisfactory. The cosh credit of the riding account had rise- from £427 to £2148 in the twelve months. The county fund credit had increased from £3545 to £7026. Total receipts from all sources, including loan money, were, £69,208 and expenditure £54,829. The percentage of current rates collected was 94.23. Expenditure had increased as a result of flood damage and other factors. Road surfaces were in good condition for macadam roads under modern traffic conditions.
Heavy storms had been experienced just before Christmas, especially in the Mungaroa Riding, where considerable damage was done. Apart from serious land erosion and damage to farm lands, fencing and stock losses suffered by the farmer ratepayers, the eaunty had suffered heavy damage to road surfaces and bridges. Five of the main bridges in the Mungaroa Riding had been carried away completely, and two were very badly damaged. The Akatarawa and Te Marua main road bridges also had suffered much damage, and the old county bridges at those points had been brought into ,use again under restricted load limits. Plans for reconstruction were in hand.
The chairman traced the work of the past year and referred to the abolition of the Wellington City and Suburban Highways Board. !
