TO CONSERVE PETROL

DELIVERY OF MILK

To conserve petrol and eliminate wasteful overlapping, a board is being set up in Christchurch to co-ordinate the delivery of milk in the city and surrounding districts. The Mayor of Christchurch, Mr. A. M. Macfarlane, is to act as chairman, and Mr. T. H. Langford, District Transport Licensing Authority, as deputy chairman. Miss Mabel Howard will represent' the Christchurch City Council, and other members will be Mr. J. E. Tait, Mayor of Sumner and chairman of the Christchurch Suburban Local Bodies' Association, Mr. J. R. D. Johns, chairman' of directors of the Christchurch Dairymen's Society, and Mr. L. Chappell, chairman of the Vendors' Association.

"A recent conference of interested parties unanimously decided that . a board of the t3 rpe suggested was essential for the conservation of oil fuel,"

said the Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan. "Business people throughout the country, who are doing their best to eliminate wasteful petrol consumption, will, appreciate this constructive endeavour to reduce the drain on our dollar funds.

"The board has been set up purely as a wartime measure and its appointment is terminated 12 months after the war. Powers have been given for it to co-ordinate deliveries, but it is hoped that all its arrangements will be made on a voluntary basis. For the purpose of meeting expenses, the board is enabled to make a levy of not more than one penny per 10 gallons of milk. Its district is the same as the Christchurch tramway district, and includes Christchurch City, the boroughs of Riccarton, New Brighton, and Sumner, and parts of the counties of Heathcote, Waimairi, Paparua, and Halswell.

"The elimination of waste, particularly with petrol, is important at all times, and specially during war," said Mr. Sullivan. "I am sure that everyone will appreciate 'the value of this move and that those personally concerned will give the board their full assistance and co-operation."
