HUTT VALLEY NEWS
PARTIES WITH A PURPOSE
(From 'The Post's" Representative.)
The. lead in a practical and generous gesture which is soon to be repeated by a number oi Lower Hutt organisations was taken yesterday by the Waimarie Croquet Club, which devoted the entire proceeds fi'om one of its popular bridge afternoons to the joint council's appeal for the sick and wounded. This spontaneous action, besides showing the club's appreciation of a national responsibility, relieved the hard-work-ing joint council committee in Lower Hutt of the work of organising any similar function.
Two other croquet clubs in the district have also promised to donate the proceeds of their next regular bridge afternoon,, and the Hutt Valley Returned Soldiers' Association is diverting the proceed' " from ' its fortnightly dance tomor/ow evening from its own necessary york among soldiers of the Great War to assist in caring for the .sick and wounded of today.
The members- of the Waimarie Croquet Club playing yesterday were reinforced in nurrber by many of their friends, so that a gathering of over sixty, filled the pavilion to the. doors. Players were welcomed by the president, Mrs. G. H. Savage, and the hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames G Mnuat, F. Vaughan. and L. F; Lawrance. At the e;n.d of the afternoon the -committee was able to announce a net profit of £5 10s.
