ENEMY'S PROGRESS

ZUYDER ZEE REACHED

NOT WITHIN 35 MILES OF

BRUSSELS

BITTER FIGHTING

LONDON, May 13,

It is impossible at this stage to give more than a sketchy view of the position in the Netherlands and Belgium, but it is , clear from official com-

niuniques that advanced motorised units of the British and French Armies are now fighting side by side with the Belgians and the Dutch.

This morning's French communique mentioned in particular a fierce German attack north of the Albert Canal in Belgium, and south of it, though it seems certain that the Germans are nowhere nearer to Brussels than 35 miles. The greatest German effort and the bitterest fighting is in the district south of the Albert Canal, where German mechanised forces penetrated to a point near the main railway line from Brussels to Liege. Though the Germans this afternoon claimed to have entered the town of Liege, they admit that some of the outer forts are still holding out. Apart from the German advance on the Meuse in the south of Holland, they have taken two provinces in the north and reached the Zuyder Zee. Most of the strategic points in the south are apparently still held by the Dutch.
