EAST INDIES CALM

PREPARED FOR NEWS

MARTIAL LAW DECLARED

USUAL TRADE LIKELY

(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.)

(Received May 13, 1 a.m.)

SINGAPORE, May 12

The Netherlands Indies took the news of the invasion calmly as the people were quite prepared, knowing the clanger of their Nazi neighbour and the Government's plans for such a contingency. Although martial law has been declared, mobilisation has not yet been ordered. It is most unlikely that there will be any interruption or disruption of trade between the Indies and other countries.

SINGAPORE, May 12,

Not a single German has escaped the Dutch East Indies round-up, and among those interned on an island in Batavia Bay are 100 Dutchmen, including police officers and high officials, suspected of being pro-Nazi and "dangerous elements."
