WATER RECEDING
FLOODS (N THE SOUTH
(By* Telegraph—Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, May 12,
With the advent of fine weather yesterday the level of the Taieri River fell sharply and the flood water which had inundated the surrounding plain was able to get away steadily for the first time for three or four days. There is, however, a considerable amount of surface water still lying between Allanton and Outram. Breaks in the river bank which were causing anxiety among residents were repaired during the weekend, and as a result the position improved considerably in both districts.
In the south-western districts also there has been a fall in the level of the flood waters, and householders in the Henley and Otokia areas •' were able on Saturday to start cleaning up.
Stock losses are likely to be very heavy in certain districts. In many places root crops and forage crops for spring feeding and a large quantity of winter fodder were completely destroyed, and it is certain that many stock owners will have to make urgent arrangements for supplies to carry them'over the winter.
The main roads in all districts are now clear, and train seryices on the Dunedin-Invercargill line* will resume their normal running tomorrow.
