WAR PROCLAMATION
SEIZURE OF 19 SHIPS

SINGAPORE, May 10,
The Governor of the Dutch East Indies, in a broadcast, declared that a state of war existed and that all Germans above the age of 16 years would be interned. The majority of the Germans who were taken from their offices were unaware that a state of war
existed,
Nineteen German cargo vessels Avhich have been harbouring in the Dutch Indies and which were recently supposed to be preparing to make a dash for Vladivostok have all been seized and their crews interned. The crews of three German ships unsuccessfully attempted to scuttle their vessels. A German sailor who resisted arrest was killed.
