MINISTER'S STATEMENT

CHRISTCHURCH, May 10
"Those people in the south affected by floods can take it from me that everything that can be done will be done to get. them out of their, trouble by clearing' highways and reinstating bridges," said the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) tonight.
Engineers ' were now making close investigations of the damage caused by the floods, said the Minister. Interim estimates of the damage had' been made, but, as a Minister, he could do little till the reports were received by him in a few days.
"Then we will set to work and do the best we can," he said. "This is the second disastrous flood New Zealand has had in the last two months. The last flood in the North. Island caused hundreds of thousands of pounds' worth of damage, and now the south has been stricken and'we have yet to face the winter."
