The Prime Minister (fee Hon. P. . Fraser) opened the Auckland West s ■ by-election campaign :last night. He will address Labour Party members in Grey ,<Lynn this evening and return to Wellington by air tomorrow.

Professor F. W. G. White and Mr. R. A. Gillespie arrived from the south this morning by the steamer express.
Mr.. Patrick -Murphy, of Kapuni' (Taranaki), died at Wanganui last week within a few months of his hundredth birthday. He was in good ■ health until a fortnight before his ' death. A pioneer settler of Taranaki, he came to New Zealand on the ship Hawera in 1875, taking sixteen weeks on the voyage. He played a worthy part in the pioneering settlement of land on the west coast.
Mr. Emil Meuli, of "Alpen Rose," Okaiawa, died at Palmerston North last week, after a short illness. He: was on his return from Wellington. Mr. Meuli was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Meuli, two of the pioneers of Haweraand Manaia, whose association with the district dates back 64 years.- He was ah old boy' of Wanganui Collegiate School and at his death, a vice-president of the Old Boys' Association. At school and in his home district he was prominent in Rugby football and with two brothers was in the 1914Waimate:team which won the Taranaki championship that year. He had one of the best-equipped dairy farms of the district arid Wed .there two horses which have: shown- good form at various meetings. ■}',■"'-
