THEIR ACCIDENT QUOTAS
Statistics relating to the location of road accidents, compiled by the Transport Department, show that during the last transport year (to March 31) over 40 per cent, of road accidents in New Zealand occurred in the four main centres, 16 per cent, in other centres of over 6000" population, 34 per cent, on rural roads, and only 9 per cent, in the small urban area. Thirty-seven per cent, of .all accidents occurred at night, and 41 per cent, of the night accidents occurred on two nights, Saturday and Sunday. The total accidents reported as causing death or injury numbered 3985, to which the Auckland metropolitan area contributed 695. Wellington 383, Christchurch 415, and Dunedin 132. Other cities and large boroughs added 640 accidents, and small boroughs, towns, districts,, and the more closely-populated outer fringes ■ 354. Rural road accidents totalled 949 in the North.and 417 in the South Island. .
