50 PER CENT. CUT
AUSTRALIAN PETROL
SUGGESTION BY PREMIER
(Received April 23, 2 a.m.)
CANBERRA, April 22.
When opening the conference of petrol and motoring interests to consider the best method of restricting petrol consumption as a means of conserving dollar exchange, the Prime Minister, Mr. R. G. Menzies, suggested that Australia might have to cut its petrol purchases by at least 50 per cent.
He pointed out that on the basis of present transactions with non-sterling countries Australia's adverse balance of £23,000,000 in the present fiscal year would be increased to over £27,000,000 in 1940-41.
