THE WEEK'S WORK

Proceed with the work mentioned in last week?s notes. Cabbages and cauliflowers may still be planted. They are less liable to be attacked by insect pests at this season. ; Pea sticks and stakes which were used for runner beans should be gathered up and stored away " in a dry place as soon as the crops are over. When taken care of they will last for several seasons. Burn up all rubbish unsuitable for burying. Primings of gooseberries and currants "and other fruit trees should always b© burnt as soon as possible, as they nearly always have some sort of blight or pest on them. • Choose seed potatoes for next season's planting. Even-sized and clean tubers of regular shape should be chosen. Propagate pansies from cuttings. Young growths springing from the base of old plants are the - only parts which make really good cuttings. These usually have a few small roots attached. "Plant out rooted cuttings and layers of carnations. The soil should be fairly firm and made 'quite firm round the young plants. Carnations love lime, and when this is sprinkled over old plants in the autumn or winter it will do much to check disease. Wood ashes are also good: applied in the same way. Give a top-dressing of good, clean, fine soil to lawns. A little sulphate of ammonia may be added to the soil with advantage. Plant cinerarias, Iceland poppies, primula malaeoides, calendulas, pansies, violas, primroses, and polyanthuses. !
