NEW YORK, April 16
Commenting on the statement by the Japanese Foreign Minister, Mr. H. Arita, regarding Japan's economic ties with the Netherlands East Indies, the New York "Herald Tribune" points out that the trade interests of Britain and the United States in the Dutch East Indies exceed those of Japan. .
The newspaper adds; "Since Japan has been the major disturber of peace in "East Asia for a decade, her claim to the right to extend her police power southwards elicits only derision and resentment from the United States, if she tries to assert naval supremacy on Singapore's doorstep she will certainly not be long in stumbling into war and forfeiting what little American consideration she still enjoys."
The Tokio correspondent of the United Press of America says , that according to a reliable informant the Japanese Government is agreeable to an arrangement by which a number of Powers will protect ,the Dutch East Indies, provided Japan is assured of a continuation of her economic rights in the Indies. .
Cargo rates to the' Far East have been raised by 50 per cent. Japanese Government bonds have declined six points.
