FIRM MARKET

LIVESTOCK AT FEILDING

A very heavy yarding of cattle.and.a small yarding of sheep' met a fairly firm market.at Feilding on Friday. Sheep, generally, held at about late, rates, but for the cattle, more particularly the heavy sorts, the demand, was quieter than last week. Fat Sheep.—A yarding of mcelyfinished mutton sold well, the prices being'slightly in excess of late rates for extra prime lines. Lambs were at unchanged values. Extra prime ewes made 20s' to 23s 6d; medium prime, 18s 6d to 19s; average quality, 15s 6d; light, 12s 6d to 14s 9d; prime heavy wethers, 26s to 27s Id; second grade, 23s to 245; light prime, 21s 9d to 22s lOd; prime lambs, 21s to 23s lOd; unfinished, 18s 6d to 19s lid.

Store Sheep.—Values for the better quality breeding ewes held firm, but indifferent and low-mouthed sorts were hard to quit. Lambs, also, were slow of sale, only a few pens selling at up to recent rates. Best, five-year ewes made 18s 7d to 20s Id; fair sorts, 17s to 17s 9d; inferior, 13s to 14s lOd; fourand five-year ewes, 19s; good two-tooth ewes, 31s tfd to 32s 4d; second quality, 28s 9d to 30s Id; others, 225 ; 5d to 275; best ewe lambs, 22s 2d to 23s lOd; fair lines, 18s to 21s; smaller stores, 15s lOd to 17s 3d; culls, from 12s 3d; wellgrown wether lambs, 14s to 15s 6d; inferior, 10s 6d to 12s 8d; good b.f. wether lambs, 14s Id to 15s Id; forward wethers, 21s Id. Store Cattle. —The station cattle were in excess of the supply, and with the season getting late farmers were unwilling to buy heavily. A large proportion of the yarding was passed in, but forward conditioned lines sold well. Well-grown three-year steers made £9 to £9 ss; others, £7 17s to £8 11s; good 2^-year steers, £6 10s to £7; 18-month steers, £5 5s to £6; backward, £2 10s to £4 9s; three-year Hereford steers, £8 to £9 Is; forward cows, £5 ss; low conditioned, £ 1 19s to £3 10s; empt A.A. heifers, £5 8s; jn.s. A.A. calves, £1 4s; yearling Herefoi'd heifers, £2 6s to £4 9s; yearlings Shorthorn heifers, from £ 1 10s; 2\year Shorthorn steers, £7 5s to £7 15s; Red Poll yearling heifers, £2 16s; good yearling Jersey heifers, £3 4s to £3 11s; others, £1 to £2 11s; works cows, heavy, £3 7s to £3 17s; others, £2 to £3.

Fat Cattle.—Beef was decidedly cheaper today, an excess entry swamping the demand. The quality was quite good among the top lines. Prime A.A. heifers made £8 15s; light prime, £6 15s; unfinished, £5 to £5 17s 6d; prime A.A. cows, £7 5s to £8; mediumweights, £6 10s to £7; light, £6; exdairy cows, £4 5s to £5 15s; light bullocks, £8 15s; runners, heavy, £4 3s 6d to £4 16s; others, £2 10s to £3 15s; vealers, 17s 6d to £2 15s.

Dairy Cattle.—The few head of winter milkers forward made good prices, particularly the early-calving heifers. Springing cows made £8; springing heifers, £8 7s 6d to £9; backward, £4; 7s 6d; heifers in milk, £7.
