FACING THE TAX TASK
The new Coalition Government in Australia is reported from Sydney to be facing its great tasks with admirable promptitude. The infusion of new blood from the Country Party might have meant a bit of pause; but Sydney advises that Mr. Menzies, with the help of Mr. Cameron and his Country contingent, is tackling a recasting of the whole system of taxation, and aims to bring down the Budget in April, which is much earlier than usual. While it is true that the recasting of a Cabinet generally means some delay before the old and the new Ministers see eye to eye sufficiently to face the recasting of a taxation system, on the other hand Mr. Menzies no doubt feels the exhilarating effect of having behind him a majprity following instead of a faithful minority. • He therefore feels ready to drive ahead without delay, and his success will depend on how faithful the enlarged following will prove to be. Nothing tests the faith of political*followers so severely as does new and^ increased taxation. Still, there is a war job to be done, and the Country Party seems to be aware that no one has more drive for the work ahead than Mr. Menzies.
